Fireworks information for the City of Central Point

The Central Point Police Department understands many residents enjoy celebrating the holiday with the use of fireworks. We ask that participants please keep all applicable fireworks laws in mind and read safety information before using fireworks.

Oregon Fireworks Laws

  • Legal Fireworks: Any fireworks which produces only smoke, sparks or fire and which DO NOT explode, eject balls of fire, fly into the air, travel more than 6 feet on the ground, or 12 inches into the air. These do not need to be confiscated.
  • Illegal Fireworks: Any firework which explodes, flies into the air, behaves in an uncontrolled and unpredictable manner, or travels more than 6 feet on the ground or 12 inches into the air. These fireworks are illegal and should be confiscated.
  • Novelty Fireworks: Novelties and Noisemakers (not regulated) can be sold all year with no permit. These can include party poppers, smoke, snakes, 10 inch metal sparklers, and more.

Fireworks Safety

There are many ways to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your neighborhood safe when dealing with fireworks. The BEST way to maintain your safety is to leave fireworks-handling to the professionals who put on large fireworks displays as these can be viewed at a safe distance from most firework-related dangers. However, we know people sometimes like to light their own fireworks so below are some important tips to keep in mind if you choose to partake.

1. Use fireworks only in outdoor settings which are away from buildings and vehicles. Never light fireworks inside or around dry grass.
2. DO NOT try to relight a “dud” firework. Instead, wait about 20 minutes before handling the firework and soak it in a bucket of water.
3. ALWAYS keep a bucket of water and a hose nearby when using fireworks.
4. DO NOT attempt to light more than one firework at a time. Focus on lighting one with enough time to quickly move away from it before it fully ignites.
5. NEVER point or throw fireworks toward another person or animal. Even if it seems harmless, most fireworks have the potential for causing harm if handled improperly.
6. For those with children partaking in a fireworks celebration, keep in mind that sparklers can heat up to around 1,200 degrees—which is hot enough to melt glass!—so be mindful of their safety and consider using glow sticks for kids to play with instead.
7. For pet-owners, make sure your pet (whether indoor or outdoor) has an identification tag on him/her in case it gets startled/scared and runs away during a fireworks display. This is important to do even if you aren’t planning on using fireworks yourself since a neighbor may be using them close enough to cause your pet to be alarmed.
8. After using fireworks, make sure to wet them down prior to leaving the area. Place them in a metal container or trash can away from any buildings or combustible materials until the next day.
9. DO NOT use illegal fireworks. Illegal fireworks are described as “any firework which explodes, flies into the air, behaves in an uncontrolled and unpredictable manner, or travels more than 6 feet on the ground or 12 inches into the air.”
10. Fireworks are prohibited on all beaches, State Parks, and State or Federal lands.
11. Store fireworks out of the reach of children.
12. ALWAYS read labels and follow directions for each firework as different rules apply for different fireworks.
