Central Point Cemetery History

The Central Point Cemetery is a 7.5-acre, non-denominational facility with three main sections: Old, 1st Addition, and 2nd Addition. A 3rd Addition was planned in 1922 but was never utilized and has since been undedicated. The origins of the cemetery's Old section remain uncertain, including details about the original landowner or when it was formally designated as a burial ground. However, the earliest known burial dates back to 1866. While some historical references cite 1868 as the cemetery’s official establishment.

The earliest known plat maps, outlining blocks, roads, and walkways, date to April 1892, though numerous burials occurred before that time. The 1st Addition dates back to November 1883, when the Haskell family deeded land to the Central Point Cemetery Association. In November 1888, the Hoaglund family also deeded land to the Association. These sections were formally platted with blocks, roadways, and walkways in August 1908. The 2nd Addition was established in January 1922.2nd Addition_001

The Central Point Cemetery Association managed the cemetery until December 1922, when responsibilities were transferred to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), and the site became known as the Central Point IOOF Cemetery. The IOOF maintained the cemetery until 1991, when ownership transferred to the Central Point Masonic Lodge, who restored its original name, Central Point Cemetery. In 2005, the Masonic Lodge transferred the property to a local nonprofit who held it until 2022 when ownership was transferred to the City of Central Point, the current owner.
