Central Point Cemetery
Location: 4900 Hamrick Road, Central Point, OR. Access road is located off of Hamrick Road. The cemetery can also be accessed from Don Jones Memorial Park located at 223 W. Vilas Road.
The Central Point Cemetery is a historic pioneer facility that was established in approximately 1868. The cemetery was managed by several different private organizations over the years with the City of Central Point taking ownership in December 2022. While it is historic, it is still an active cemetery with interments occurring on a regular basis but only for those who currently own plots. Due to the lack of historic cemetery records, the City of Central Point has made the decision not to sell any plots in the future but, as per Oregon State Ordinance, we will honor all those who purchased plots in the past. Additionally, Oregon State Statute requires that the cemetery owner keep records of all interments. Since this is the case all those seeking to inter remains must contact the Cemetery Manager/Sexton and a Central Point Cemetery Interment Authorization form must be completed and submitted prior to burial. A link to a copy of the interment form is at the bottom of the page.
Additionally, as a licensed cemetery, Oregon State statues require that the city develop and implement ordinances and rules for the following reason:
1. Ensure Public Safety and Order: Cemeteries are public or semi-public spaces. Rules help maintain respectful and safe environments for visitors, workers, and the community, especially during sensitive events like funerals or interments.
2. Protect Burial Rights: Clear ordinances protect the rights of individuals who have purchased burial plots. This includes ensuring proper interment practices, recordkeeping, and access rights.
3. Establish Accountability and Consistency: Having formal, written rules ensures that the cemetery is managed consistently and transparently—no arbitrary decisions about who can be buried, when, or under what conditions.
4. Meet State Legal Requirements: Under Oregon law (ORS Chapter 97 – Rights and Duties Relating to Cemeteries, Human Bodies and Burial), licensed cemeteries must:
- Keep records of interments (ORS 97.710)
- Follow specific practices regarding disinterment and re-interment (ORS 97.220),
- Maintain cemetery grounds in a reasonable manner (ORS 97.785),
- And if they are municipal cemeteries, the city council or governing body must adopt rules and ordinances governing cemetery operations.
5. Support Long-Term Management: Rules allow cemeteries to plan and manage operations, maintenance, and future land use. This includes things like headstone standards, maintenance schedules, and plot resale policies.
